Based in San Francisco, CA, Rippling has raised $1.2B from the world's top investors—including Kleiner Perkins, Founders Fund, Sequoia, Bedrock, and Greenoaks—and was named one of America's best startup employers by Forbes (#12 out of 500).

About the role

We are looking for a sharp, highly-motivated, forward-thinking Counsel, Payments & Regulatory to help us expand our U.S. and global payments products around the globe. This is an exciting opportunity to build the legal infrastructure supporting our financial cloud product stack, interfacing with our business teams, regulators and industry groups, outside counsel and vendors to develop and execute on a wide range of payments-related initiatives. You will have an opportunity to make a big impact in a fast-paced organization creating a first-in-kind platform that spans numerous regulated industries. You will also help drive the compliance culture at Rippling across our product and operations. The ideal candidate loves the regulatory challenge of bringing innovation to payments and banking systems, takes ownership over initiatives, has excellent analytical and communication skills, and fundamentally believes that integrity (and lawyering) need not be boring.

What you will do

  • Design and set up the legal infrastructure for payments movement around the globe

  • Act as a legal advisor to the business on our financial and payments products, including product counseling, regulator interactions and requirements, licensing, UDAAP, and other legal issues

  • Serve as the point of contact for our payment product teams, helping to embed legal and compliance values in all new product and business initiatives

  • Craft and implement pragmatic, efficient, and scalable legal and compliance processes

  • Assist in the development of internal legal and compliance processes

  • Advise the business on and monitor new legislation and regulations related to payments products

What you will need

  • 2+ years of legal experience in a law firm and/or in-house legal department

  • A strong interest in payments and regulatory counseling, preferably with past experience counseling in a highly regulated industry (e.g., fintech, banking, insurance)

  • Experience working with and advising teams across different global regions and liaising with outside counsel for support

  • Passion for navigating complex regulatory frameworks and finding solutions

  • Entrepreneurial mindset (flexible, self-starting and hard-working)

  • Excellent communicator with the ability to break down complex requirements into easy-to-understand and practical advice

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Sense of humor!

  • JD, LLB, LLM, or equivalent degree or otherwise authorized to practice law

  • Must be fluent in English, fluency in other languages is a plus
