TEAM & ROLE
As an Engineering Manager at Benepass, you will lead a team of 3–8 engineers owning our client apps, including multiple web applications and our mobile application built in React Native. Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, you will drive end-to-end outcomes for user-facing experiences, ensuring scalable, secure, and delightful solutions that empower employees to access their benefits seamlessly. With a strong technical background, you will stay hands-on, jumping in to code, prototype, or debug alongside your team when needed, while excelling in communication and leadership to shape technical strategy, mentor engineers, and foster a high-performing, inclusive culture. Your leadership will ensure our platform and team scale to support Benepass’s ambitious growth, aligning with our Engineering Department Values: Own the Outcome, Discipline in the Small Things, Keep It Simple, Ship It Fast, Empathy & Open Collaboration, and Build with Craft, Stability, Scale, and Security.
ROLE LOCATION & TRAVEL
You will be expected to attend company-wide on-site events three times per year.

ABOUT YOU
Technical Expertise: Deep software engineering experience, particularly in Python/Django, JavaScript/React or React Native, enabling you to guide architectural decisions and contribute code hands-on.
Leadership & Empathy: Exceptional communicator who builds psychological safety, encourages diverse perspectives, and coaches engineers toward their growth goals.
Outcome-Driven: Passionate about owning end-to-end outcomes, from roadmap planning to production monitoring, ensuring customer delight and system reliability.
Disciplined Craft: Committed to simplicity, clean code, and rigorous processes (e.g., code reviews, automated testing) aligned with Benepass’s values of discipline and scalability.
REQUIREMENTS
Experience: 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years leading teams of 3–8 engineers, ideally in a startup or SaaS environment focused on client apps.
Technical Leadership: Proven ability to lead design reviews, enforce coding standards, and prototype solutions in JavaScript/React, React Native, or Python/Django, ensuring scalable, secure systems.
People Development: Experience mentoring engineers through 1:1s, setting growth goals tied to an IC matrix, and building inclusive hiring pipelines.
Delivery Excellence: Track record of managing SDLC processes, defining KPIs (e.g., DORA metrics, velocity), and delivering high-quality client app features on time.
BONUS SKILLS
Experience in fintech, particularly with benefits platforms or payment systems, ensuring user-centric, secure, and compliant solutions.
Expertise in handling large-scale data or building systems with critical reliability, such as high-availability client apps or financial infrastructure.
Proven ability to set, measure, and achieve team KPIs and metrics (e.g., cycle time, defect rates, velocity), driving continuous improvement.
Experience evaluating and adopting tools (e.g., CI/CD, observability, IDE plugins) to enhance software delivery efficiency and developer satisfaction.
Strong background in people management, including running effective 1:1s, performance reviews, promotion cases, and performance improvement plans.
Experience interviewing and hiring talent, designing inclusive hiring processes, and leveling up existing team members through mentorship and skill development.
COMPENSATION
Base salary of $180,000 to $210,000 + equity.
Range(s) is subject to change. Benepass takes a number of factors into account when determining individual starting pay, including market comparables, interview performance, peer compensation, and years of experience.
